How to Jailbreak any Kindle Device

Jailbreak working on most of the kindle devices is now public so if you haven’t updated your kindle to 5.14.3 you are the lucky ones.

For devices running FW version <= 5.14.2 Thank you to NiLuJe, yparitcher and darkassassinua for there support.

This jailbreak is compatible with following devices
KT3, KT4, KOA1, KOA2, KOA3, PW3, PW4, PW5:

Following are the steps required for the Jailbreak:-
Setup

• Prior reset copy all relevant data from the document folder, clipping, and screenshots, etc
• Factory reset the device, Select the “en_GB” or “English (United Kingdom)” as the language
• Type ;enter_demo in the Kindle search bar after performing a factory reset. Your device will reboot

Following steps are specific for few devices and regions if wifi setup appears continue and if it doesn’t don’t worry skip to ;demo step

• Once you are in demo mode, skip setting up wifi and enter dummy values for store registration
• Skip searching for a demo payload
• Select the “standard” demo type
• Press “Done” at the prompt to sideload content. Do not sideload the jailbreak at this stage.
• Once the demo is set up, skip the misconfiguration lockout using the “secret gesture” (double finger tap on the bottom right of the screen then swipe left)

(Hint: First double tap using two fingers on the left side of the screen as shown above, then swipe left to right from the rightmost point on the device)

• Enter the demo configuration menu by typing ;demo into the search bar
• Select the “Sideload Content” option

Start Jailbreak

Connect the device to a PC and move necessary files:

1. Create the directory .demo at the root ( if there is problem creating .demo folder use cmd/terminal and run command mkdir .demo )
2. Copy ${YOUR_DEVICE}-${YOUR_FW_VERSION}.zip to .demo/ example PW3–5.13.7.zip
3. Copy demo.json to .demo/
4. Create an empty folder at .demo/Goodreads. Do not put any files in this folder.

1. Press “Done” at the prompt to install the jailbreak script

If an application error occurs, hard reboot the device by holding the power button for few seconds, enter the demo menu again and select Sideload Content -> done

6. Exit the demo menu and either enter ;dsts or swipe down and select the settings icon to enter the device settings menu

7. Select “Help & User Guides” then “Get started”. For jailbreaking KT2 or PW2, select the store button

And Voilà you are Jailbroken Congrats — Though the work isn’t done yet we need to install a hotfix to keep jailbreak survive the update

Post Jailbreak

• After the device has rebooted, type ;uzb into the search bar
• Connect the device to a PC and copy Update_hotfix_watchthis_custom.bin to the root of the Kindle storage
• Eject the device and either enter ;dsts or swipe down and select the settings icon to enter the device settings menu
• Select Update Your Kindle to install the custom hotfix

This will take your device out of demo mode, rebuild the application registry, and clean up unneeded jailbreak files.

Troubleshooting

1. Alternative to enter Demo Mode entry method:
2. Create an empty file named DONT_CHECK_BATTERY at the root of the Kindle USB storage
3. Activate demo mode by typing ;demo into the search bar
4. Once in demo mode, skip setting up wifi and enter dummy values for store registration when prompted
5. If you need to reset your device whilst in Demo Mode, enter ;uzb in the search bar to enable USB storage mode then create an empty file named “DO_FACTORY_RESTORE” at the root of the Kindle storage.
